SWEET DADDY GRACE

Born in 1881 on the Cape Verdean island of Brava, Marcelino Manuel da Graça, later known as Sweet Daddy Grace, arrived in America at 23 and became a charismatic religious leader and businessman. He founded the United House of Prayer for All People, which grew to over 375 churches across 23 states and 67 cities, with more than 3 million followers. The organization became a multimillion-dollar empire worth $25 million, making Daddy Grace the richest Black bishop in America. His church offered a space for creativity and opportunity, where he excelled at building something from nothing. Flamboyant, iconic, and often times controversial, Sweet Daddy's story is a story of American sucess –– for better or worse.
