BLACK MANGROVE: THE WIWA STORY

In 1993, Ken Saro-Wiwa, renown writer, TV personality, and spokesperson for the Ogoni people in Nigeria, leads a non-violent protest against foreign oil companies in the Niger Delta. After declaring on national TV that the Ogonis would boycott the presidential election, he angers both government bureaucrats and corrupt elites, but also undisclosed shady foreign powers. His activism grows too loud for Nigeria’s military leadership, leading to his arrest, along with eight others, on false murder charges. Known as the Ogoni 9, they are sentenced to execution in a sham trial. Ken’s brother, Owens Wiwa, takes on the failed mission to save his life. This is their story. Adapted for TV from J. Timothy Hunt's The Politcis of Bones.
