Basil da Cunha began his career producing several self-financed short films before joining Switzerland’s Thera Production in 2008, where he made A CÔTÉ (screened at Locarno and Vila do Conde festivals). In 2009, he moved to Reboleira near Lisbon, directing SUNFISH and OS VIVOS TAMBÉM CHORAM (ALSO THE LIVING CRY), both selected for Cannes' Directors’ Fortnight in 2011 and 2012. He graduated in film from HEAD Geneva in 2012, where he has taught since 2013. His first feature, AFTER THE NIGHT, was also screened at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2013. In 2014, he released NUVEM NEGRA (DARK CLOUD), winning an award at Oberhausen and screening at the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Geneva. His second feature, THE END OF THE WORLD, premiered at Locarno in 2019. In 2022, he directed the first episode of the Swiss TV documentary series FUTURA! and in 2023, his short 2720 won over ten awards, including Oberhausen’s Grand Prize. That year, his feature MANGA D’TERRA competed at Locarno. Currently, he is in post-production on O JACARÉ (THE ALLIGATOR), developing the series INNIMIGO PÚBLICO (PUBLIC ENNEMY) , and has written a new feature, FURY, which is in the financing stage.
