The Lost Paradise is a 60-minute documentary about Amélia, a Cape Verdean woman deceived into indentured labor in the small archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe in the 1960s. After years of hardship, she finally returns to Cabo Verde, which she nostalgically longed for as her paradise. However, once back, Amélia feels out of place, with no close relatives or connection to the customs and society. Home lived on without her. Realizing she no longer belongs, she decides to return to São Tomé. Amélia’s story raises questions about belonging and explores the historical relationship between Cabo Verde and São Tomé through music and personal reflections.
